Freedom to Build What Matters
Whatever you can dream of, you can build.
In the world of bits, we’ve crossed into abundance. The first real expressions of AGI are here, and they’ve rewritten what a single person can do.
Alec Radford built GPT and showed the world what language models could become. Georgi Gerganov, working alone, wrote the code that put large language models on a laptop. Brian Hie, a graduate student, proved that the same architectures powering chatbots could predict how viruses mutate to escape our immune systems.
A single person can now do what once required entire institutions. That kind of power has never existed before. And yet, what we’re witnessing is a profound misallocation of it. There’s no shortage of deep, important, and urgent problems in the world. But they won’t be solved by another AI agent for sales outbound or another tool for kids to cheat on their homework. Looking past the startup theater of fundraising announcements, and breathless product launches, much of AI feels like it’s failing to produce anything that matters. Short-form video. AI romantic companions. Better ads.
Now is the opportunity to do the work that will define an era. The next Fairchild, the next Genentech, are being built right now by people who refuse to work on anything less.
Our Encode: AI for Science Fellowship is for those builders.
One year. Full salary and compute. A workspace and community of other builders pushing themselves to their highest potential. And, no equity taken.
Through the UK’s Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) and our partnerships with the UK’s top research institutes you will have direct access to frontier labs, data, and domain experts across biomaterials, atmospheric science, neuromodulation, robotics, and more. We’ve cleared every obstacle except the hard part. That’s yours.
We create the freedom. You build what matters.
Apply to be an Encode Fellow by 28th March 2026.
